Character's full name: Alphonse Elric
Anime/manga/video game that the character is from: Full Metal Alchemist; Bluebird's Illusion.
What school year your character is going to be: College Freshman
Background: So. How in-depth do you want it?
I'll start with his childhood.
Alphonse was a very, very, very cute little child. He had just the right amount of baby fat to make people squeal and cuddle him, and eyes innocent enough to bend even the strictest person to his will.
But, of course, he didn't know it. He thought that everyone was just being nice. ♥
He grew up quite happily with his mother, Trisha, and his brother, Edward, and didn't remember his father at all. All he knew was that Ed didn't like him, and that their mother loved him very, very much.
He and Ed were always going through their father's alchemy books, teaching themselves how to do it. Al's creations were never as good as Ed's, but that didn't sadden him. Ed was older, of course he'd be better at it!
But sometimes it did make him feel just a little angry. He always felt guilty about being angry later, but he couldn't help it.
Their mother was proud of them, though, for learning alchemy at such a young age.
What age were they? I dunno, it never says. I'm guessing about five to seven, give or take a few years. Seven sounds about right for Ed, so that'd make Al six.
Well, anyway. When they were young, their mother died due to sickness. Ed and Al were left as practically orphans, and were taken in by their neighbour and friend's grandmother, Pinako.
Until Izumi Cutis came to Resembool, that is.
While she was in a hospital bed, the two begged her to take them as her apprentices. Normally, when someone's in a hospital bed, you don't go to annoy them about teaching you alchemy.
It's hard to tell if it was a good thing that the boys did it. If they hadn't, Al would've kept his body, Ed would have his arm and leg, and they'd live in Resembool. But because they did beg, and because Izumi accepted, they attempted to bring their mother back to life, lost Al's body and Ed's leg. When Ed sealed Al's soul into a seven foot suit of armor, he lost his arm.
If it weren't for the training, Ed wouldn't be known as the Full-Metal Alchemist, and the Homunculi probably would've been able to do their thing.
...Anyway.
The main part of their training shown has them on an island in the middle of a lake. They're told that when they discover the meaning of "one is all, all is one", Izumi will accept them as her apprentices.
They're given a machete, and told to fend for themselves for a month.
At first, they don't want to kill any animals that they catch. As a consequence, they go hungry.
They slept on beds of tree leaves, and kept count on a tree of how many days they had been there.
While they were sleeping on the first night, a monster attacked them. Quite literally.
They tried to fight it, but, in the end, they were left bruised and hurting all over.
Things continued like that for quite a while; when the boys made fish, the monster came and stole it. Eventually, the boys realized that they'd have to aim to kill the monster or they'd die.
So the next time the monster came, they fought properly.
After that, they killed a rabbit that they caught, and had the first thing resembeling a dinner since they'd been put on the island. They realized that nothing would really change if they died on that island - the world wouldn't stop.
When Izumi came to pick them up, they were ready to answer her. "All is the world, and one is me." Izumi accepts them, to which they respond with a "Big brother! Living is so wonderful!" and "Little bro!" It's really quite cute.
And then they discover that the monster was none other than a worker at the Curtis' butcher shop, and they're "ieoegisaohjdje WHUT", because that guy tried to kill them.
But, they go back to the mainland, train with Izumi (who beats them up while reading a cooking book) and return to Resembool full of alchemetical knowledge, and more than a few lines drilled into their heads. The most important one being "never attempt human transmutation".
So what do they do?
They try to bring their mother back, using human transmutation. By this time, Al is around ten years old, and not as confident as his brother. He worries that the transmutation will go wrong, but he trusts Ed, so doesn't say anything.
Al lost his body trying to bring their mother back. His flesh was ripped apart by the creatures within the Gate, and his soul was breaking away. He saw the Gate, went through it, and damn near didn't come back out.
But then, suddenly, the pain had stopped. He wasn't hot, he wasn't cold, he wasn't anything. He couldn't feel.
Although, that didn't really register in his mind until much later. He was just a tad preoccupied with getting Ed - who was bleeding all over the floor - some help.
So he took Ed to Pinako, begging her to save him. He didn't notice that he wasn't in his body until Ed woke up, and it was only because his head fell off when he walked into a door.
From then on, Alphonse was stuck in a suit of armor, and some of his memories were missing. He was frequently mistaken as the Full-Metal Alchemist due to his body, and always had to calm Ed down. He acted as the water for Edward's fire, and even though sometimes it annoyed him that his brother got so worked up over everything, he wouldn't've wanted to change Ed's personality for anything.
Al was almost always by his big brother's side. He went with him on military missions, vacations (that they didn't even take), research assignments (disguised as missions) and shopping trips. An Ed without an Al was like having bread without flour - it just didn't happen, unless you had a cheap subsititue.
Al, in his armor body, became the Philosopher's Stone - a legendary alchemetical material that made Equivilent Exchange walk out the door. The boys were planning on making one and restoring their bodies, but they scrapped that when they discovered that they'd need live human sacrifices.
Scar, however, had no such qualms about killing a village. The way that Al became the Stone varies between the anime and manga, but all that matters is that he did become it, and any time he used alchemy, a piece of his armor was eaten away.
At the end of the anime, when Envy kills Ed, Al sacrifices himself to repair his brother's body and attach his (Ed's) soul to it. Doing so breaks Al's armor down and sends his soul into the Gate, and as soon as Ed realizes what happened, he sacrifices himself to bring Al (and Al's body) back.
Because of this, Ed was sent through the Gate and into our world.
But I'm not doing The Conqueror of Shamballa, I'm doing Blue Bird's Illusion!
BBI actually takes off from the manga, which hasn't ended yet. In it, Al has his body back, and looks to be about seventeen. He's taller than Ed, has had a hair-cut, and wears neat clothes. He actually acts as their house-maid, cooking, cleaning, keeping kittens behind Ed's back - oops.
However, there's a problem with Al's body and soul - they aren't compatible. His body is actually rejecting his soul, causing him extreme pain, black-outs, and severe coughing. He tries to hide it all from Ed, and mostly succeeds, but still worries his brother.
Ed and Al live together, in a small house in Central. Ed still has his military job - but has been promoted to Colonel, while Mustang moved up to General, and Al stays home to look after the house during the day while Ed's working.
Through the game, there is a series of murders of blonde-haired women. Ed isn't assigned to this case until later, when Al becomes a suspect. Al had been acting odd, coming home with blood on his shirt, blood-stained gloves, wounds where victims had supposedly hit their attackers...
But Ed refused to believe that Al was the murderer. His little brother, the sweet person who hid kittens in his armor, the innocent child with the bright smile, the one person in the world who wasn't after money or power?
Turns out, Al wasn't the murderer. He was just looking after new-born kittens.
The investigation ended with the capture of someone who idolized Barry the Chopper, and Al was left alone.
When Ed got sick from working too much, Al was reluctant to let him go to work. When he came home, Al had prepared a special dish that was supposed to help him get better. He ate it, and woke up the next day feeling good as new! Al was all "=D! I really need to thank the neighbours for these recepies! Now eat up, brother, these are supposed to keep you healthy. ♥♥♥"
A few days later, Ed woke up to Al unconscious on their living room floor. He wanted to take the day off to watch his little brother, but Al waved him off, promising him that he'd be fine.
Just after Ed left, Al started coughing up blood. But when Ed came home, Al was acting normal, so his brother didn't suspect anything.
It continued like that until, one day, Ed didn't come home from work. Al was understandably stressed - it wasn't like Ed to just not turn up, he would've called ahead and told him that he couldn't make it.
The morning after that, he was contacted by Roy, who told him that Ed had gone missing. Al joined the team investigating his brother's - and the Fuhrer's - disappearance, and together, he and Roy found a secret enterance to a basement hidden underneath the Military Headquarters.
Just off-topic for a bit; I hope you have a very merry unbirthday, Modlings. It's my birthday soon! =D
And now, back to the story!
Once Al and Roy were in the basement, they had to fight Envy - who was being an annoying bastard and dropping hints that they didn't kidnap Ed - and Lust. After the fights, they snuck along a corridor and listened in on Hoho-Papa and Bradley, and Al blew their cover when he realized that Hoho-Papa was his papa, too!
...'Course, that didn't turn out so good, and Bradley was given the order to kill Al. Roy blows his own cover to tell Al to get out of there, but Al doesn't want to leave - until Envy appears and Roy reminds Al that Ed's still around somewhere. Al bolts, Envy bitches, and Roy fights Bradley.
While Al's running, he thinks to himself about how his body's not going to last much longer - he's having trouble breathing, seeing straight, and his entire body hurts.
When he finds Ed, Ed's pretty out of it. Instead of worrying about his body, Al focuses on getting Ed to safety - and consequently ends up in the middle of a transmutation circle that Ed attempts to use to restore Al's body properly. Through the transmutation, Al stops it, knowing just what his brother will have to pay with. Ed can't re-attempt the transmutation, due to being exausted, and both of the brothers are trying to get the other to a hospital. (Note that neither are thinking about putting themself in the hospital.)
Then Envy comes along, and spoils their little "I NEED TO GET MY BROTHER TO THE HOSPITAL ASAP" fest. Envy taunts them a bit, Roy turns up, Bradley turns up, they start fighting.
...Without warning.
As in, Envy decided that he wanted to punch Ed, Al got in the way, and Envy punched his way through Al's lung.
Meanwhile, Roy was doing his share of dying as well.
Ed, in his anger, began attempting to transmute Roy and Al better. Both the Homunculi were stressing, telling him that even if he did that, it wasn't going to bring them back, and TO FUCKING STOP IT ALREADY!!!!!!!oneonefive!
Then blah blah, the rest doesn't really matter because it's not about Al, etc.
It's not actually made clear what happened to Roy's and Al's bodies - it says that they were never found. It also never clearly states if they both died during the attacks, or if they died when the place collapsed. Also, it's unlikely that Ed's transmutation worked, but it's also not stated if it did.
...So instead of taking a huge leap of faith, I'm pulling Al out just before Envy hit him. So he doesn't have a hole in chest or anything.
But still has a dodgy body, but hopefully, the Avorians are like, magical, and can fix him. Or something.
Oh, hey, this would probably be a good time to explain how Pride knows him;
He doesn't.
Envy told him stories.I was just waiting for someone to figure it out, y'know? I mean, come on, Pride only believes what Envy tells him - or he did before he was told to get a personality.
Al's personality?
Well~
He's kind, thoughtful, sweet, gentle, caring, smart, manipulative ("...can't you just grant me this one wish, brother? I just want to cook with you... Please, brother."), and calm. As previously stated, when Ed gets worked up, Al calms him down.
He likes kittens. No, really, he likes them a lot. He's always picking them up off the street, naming them, and letting them live in the attic. He helps pregnant cats give birth, gives the cat and its kittens a place to stay, along with food and drink, and pulls out the "Oh Please Brother I Love You Let Me Have It" eyes every time Ed catches him with a feline.
He knows how to get his way with Ed, but most of the time, "his way" is the way that's most benifical to Ed's health.
Al enjoys acting like a mother - he tries to be a replacement, and even wears an apron while cooking. He does the grocery shopping, probably picked out and decorated the house, and spends his free time with the children at the orphanage. He's an all-around good guy, and probably doesn't even know what sex is yet.
You want proof?
Fine. Al was taking a shower, and Ed had just woken up from a nap. Ed started getting undressed, planning on a shower, but instead found Al - naked and soapy ♥ - in the shower, and started blushing like mad. Al's response? "Brother? Are you feeling alright? Are you cold?"
Real scene in the game, I shit you not!
---
I'm nicking his speech pattern from it - which means that when he's over-emotional, dots come out lyk woah!
...Y'know, only reason why I'm apping him is to try and get the FMA characters active. Pride'll be trying to kill him, so that should do something to wake everyone else up. Hopefully.
Oh, and.
He's taller than Ed. XD By about a head. No, really, I can give you screencaps if you want.
